This section is meant to give you an idea of different ways trips can be planned, showing you what we've done in the past. Hopefully you can profit from our experiences and use this information to plan your own special trip. We'll mention what we think worked and what didn't--what we'd do again and what we wouldn't.
2006: Southern Italy
Sixteen glorious days from the Amalfi Coast to Calabria to Sicily, with an emphasis on Calabria. Les and I went with my sister, Judy and her husband, Dean. We flew into Rome where we picked up our renatl car, a Renault Scenic (diesel), and headed south. It was shoulder season (mid-September) and the weather was, well, shall we say, changeable?
2005: The English Countryside
The two of us on a driving/walking holiday in the beautiful English countryside, stopping in the Cotswolds, Newton-Harcourt, the Yorkshire Dales, the Devon coast, and a final stop in Henley-on-Thames. We rented a car and stayed at our two major stops (Yorkshire Dales and the Devon coast) for a week each, using our lodging as a base from which to take day trips, both by car and on foot. We went at the height of tourist season (early to mid August), and the weather was gorgeous.
The two of us spending a week in France and a week in Italy, with a brief final stop in the Appenzell, including a visit with my niece, Anna, a meeting with a new Internet friend, and a visit to a lovely new hotel opened by a good friend to replace our beloved Vigiljoch, which closed in 1999.
2003: The South and West of Ireland
Les and I with my mom, Grace, and her sister, Loretta with a rental car in Ireland for two weeks in June. We stayed the first week in a cottage outside Killarney, using it as a base to tour the southwest corner of the Emerald Isle, then drove north to Galway Bay, further north to County Mayo, then back down to the area near Shannon Airport.
2002: The UK Countryside Revisited
The two of us in a rental car, returning to the back roads and small villages of the UK, this time in England and Wales. We visited four national parks in a 17-day period, circling from Newton-Harcourt (Leicester) to the Yorkshire Dales, to Eastern Wales, and finally ending in central Wiltshire. Late June to mid-July.
The two of us in a rental car touring the Provence region of France, then Les on his own with the car in Northern Italy and the Jura region of France, and me meeting up with my mom, sister and a friend to do Rome, Amalfi, Assisi, Ravenna and the South Tyrol via rental car and train. Late September to early October.
The two of us in a rental car touring the back roads and small towns of England and Scotland from Newton-Harcourt, north of London, to Hawes in Yorkshire, to Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands, to Grasmere in the Lakes District, to a farmhouse in the Cotswolds. Late May.
Alsace, Rome, Cinque Terre, the South Tyrol, Budapest, Paris. Two adults (Beth and Les), two teenage girls (Angela, 16 and Anna, 14). Rental cars and night trains. Late June to early July.
The two of us in a rental car touring the north of Italy from the southern Riviera to the Alps. Levanto (and the Cinque Terre), Bilbao (Lucca), Torri di Benaco (Garda Lake), Vigiljoch and Merano (Alps), and Schoengrund, in the Appenzell area of Switzerland. October.
1995: The Central Europe Big Road Trip
The two of us, with occasional guest appearances by Beth's niece, Cara, in rental cars, on a journey that takes us from London and the Cotswolds in England to Reims and Colmar in France, to Vigiljoch and Merano in the Italian Alps, to Freising in Germany and finally to Brugge/Bruges in Belgium. Lots of miles racked up on this early Septermber road trip.
1994: Circling the Alps
The two of us return to Europe for a lovely circular drive of central Europe in the spring. Starting at the airport in Frankfurt, we made our way up to the Mosel River area and the town of Beilstein, then over to Alsace in France and the village of La Poutrois, and from there down to Bellagio, Italy, on Lake Como, over to Venice, up to Vigiljoch in the Alps, north to Bühl (near Germany's Black Forest), over to Kallstadt on the German wine route, and finally back to Frankfurt for our flight home.
Our first trip together to Europe! We decided to limit ourselves to Italy for the romantic honeymoon we had always dreamed of. Sqeezing a little bit of many places into our tight schedule, we visited Bellagio on Lake Como, Vigiljoch in the Alps, Venice, Rome, Tuscany, Viareggio on the Mediterranean coast, Sestri Levante on the Riviera and finally Zürich. Mid to late September. Overall nice weather with intermittent showers. Hot and humid in Rome.
